TORONTO LYNX MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lady Lynx Put Undefeated Record on the
Line!
Tuesday, June 7, 2005 (TORONTO, ON) - The
Toronto Lady Lynx will attempt to win their fifth straight match in their
W-League inaugural season when they welcome the Sudbury Canadians to
Centennial Park Stadium tomorrow for the Lady Lynx School Day Matinee at
11:00am. The School Day match is an extension of the highly successful
Toronto Lynx School Program that sees players providing soccer skills
clinics and educational seminars at schools across the GTA beginning each
September. This season will mark the 7th year of the program that saw the
Toronto Lynx men's professional team draw 4,250 spectators to their annual
School Day last Tuesday, May 31. " This is the first year that we are
holding a Toronto Lady Lynx School Day. The interest has been great.
However, the work to rule situation prevented a lot of schools from coming
out. We hope to grow the Lady Lynx side over the next few years!", says
Nicole Hartrell, the club's Chief Operating Officer. The President of the
Ontario Elementary School Teachers Federation will be performing the
ceremonial kick off at tomorrow's event with school choirs/bands providing
the musical entertainment.
On the field, the Lady Lynx have won their first
four matches of the season by a combined score of 8-1, including a 1-0
victory over the Canadians in Sudbury on May 28th. In that match, the Lady
Lynx were held scoreless until a 90th minute goal by defender, Catharine
Marosszeky. Marosszeky and her defensive teammates have been outstanding
this season, surrendering only 1 goals in 4 matches, and have
helped 'keeper, Stacey Van Boxmeer, to a W-League best 3 shutouts.
Offensively, the scoring load has been shared by several players including
Japanese striker, Yuiko Konno, who scored both goals in a 2-0 Lady Lynx
victory over the Vermont Lady Voltage on Sunday.
LYNX SHAKE UP ROSTER
With the Canadian transfer window now open for
the month of June, the Toronto Lynx have made several roster changes looking
to improve on a 0-7-4 start to the season. The Lynx have looked into their
past to return two outstanding players on loan for the remainder of the
season from MISL clubs. Midfielder, Edgar Bartolomeu, returns to the Lynx
after spending the 2004/05 indoor season with the Philadelphia Kixx, while
Robbie Aristodemo joins the Club from the MISL runner up, Cleveland Force.
Bartolomeu is a former MLS player with the New
York/New Jersey Metrostars that showed tremendous quality with the Lynx last
season. The tenacious midfielder/defender is already securing his spot
in Head Coach, Hubert Busby Jr.'s starting team, playing all 90 minutes of
two matches over the weekend.
Former USL Rookie of the Year and Lynx Most
Valuable Player, Robbie Aristodemo, has also returns to Toronto after
spending the first 3 seasons of his professional career with the
Lynx. Aristodemo played 8 games with the Seattle Sounders in 2004 before
being released. Aristodemo is a tremendous possession midfielder whose
creativity with the ball and work rate will surely help the Lynx
offensively. A native of Etobicoke, Aristodemo has earned 7 caps for Canada
over his playing career.
The Lynx have also added Trinidadian defender,
Nigel Henry, in an attempt to solidify a defense that has allowed a USL
First Division worst 23 goals. Thus far, the addition has proved positive as
the Lynx allowed only 1 goal in two matches over the weekend with Henry in
the lineup. The towering Henry, brings plenty of USL First Division
experience, playing with Hershey and Montreal before spending the previous
season with the Charleston Battery before his release last month.
"Obviously we felt the need to shake things up a
bit because of the lack of results," explained Busby. "However, more
importantly, I wanted to bring in character players who care about this club
and I believe we have signed three great professionals that will help
with experience that has been lacking thus far."
In order to make room on the roster for the new
signings, the Lynx have released striker, Conrad Smith and midfielders,
Shawn Faria and Winston Griffiths. Smith, from Trinidad and Tobago, recorded
1 goal and 1 assist in 6 matches with the Lynx while, Griffiths had 1 goal
in 4 matches. Faria had yet to see action this season due to injury.
BOTH LYNX AND LADY LYNX IN ROCHESTER
THIS FRIDAY!
The revised Toronto Lynx roster will renew their
rivalry with the Rochester Raging Rhinos this Friday, June 10 at 7:35 pm at
Frontier Field in Rochester. The match will be the second meeting between
the clubs in the past 2 weeks, after the Raging Rhinos sprinted to a 4-0
lead in Toronto on May 31st before holding on for a 5-3 victory. The Raging
Rhinos are beginning to find the form that has made them a playoff team
in each year of their existence, winning their past 2 games to move to 3-4-1
on the season. History will be on the Rhinos' side this Friday, as the Lynx
have a all-time 1-14-0 record in Rochester with the only win coming on May
6, 2000. Friday's match will be webcast live at
www.rhinossoccer.com.
The Toronto Lady Lynx will also make the trip to
Rochester this Friday to take on the Rochester Ravens at 7:30pm at Alquinas
Institute. The Ravens have begun the season with a 1-2-0 record and sit in
fourth place in the Northern Division of the W-League. The match will be
the first of three meetings between the Ravens and Northern Division
leading, Lady Lynx that should have an impact on the playoff picture in the
Eastern Conference. This season, the Lady Lynx are 1-0-0 on the road while
the Ravens have a 1-1-0 record on home turf.
DODDS SELECTED TO TEAM OF THE WEEK
For the second straight week, Lynx midfielder,
Jamie Dodds, was selected to the USL First Division Team of the Week. After
being named the USL First Division Player of the Week honours for his goal
and 2 assist performance in a 4-4 tie with Puerto Rico, Dodds played well in
a 0-0 draw in Montreal and scored in a 5-3 loss to Rochester to earn the
honours this week. With goals in back-to-back home games on
brilliant curling free kicks, the second-year professional from Burlington
is quickly becoming a crowd favourite at Lynx matches.
