Two
Lynx on USL-1 Team of the Week; Lynx hit the road for two key matches.
TUESDAY
AUGUST 1, 2006[TORONTO, ON]
The Toronto Lynx bolstered their line-up for an August playoff push with the
signing of veteran midfielder Shawn Faria. The 28-year old Faria returns
for his fourth season with the Lynx, and will provide depth at the midfield
position, with Joe Mattacchione and Cam Medwin currently out of the line-up
due to injury. The
Mississauga native joined the Lynx prior to the
2002 season after a stellar career at the
University of
Louisville and was a mainstay in the
line-up, providing tenacious play on and off the ball for
Toronto. Faria is expected to join the
Lynx this weekend as they travel to Atlanta and
Charleston for a pair of key matches.
Friday evening sees the
Lynx make their first visit to the brand-new
Atlanta
Silverbacks
Park,
one of two sparkling soccer-specific stadiums which opened this year in the
USL First Division. The Silverbacks sit tied for fifth with Puerto Rico in the USL-1 table, with an 8-6-4 record (28
points). The Lynx have a 1-3-1 road record all-time versus the
Silverbacks. Atlanta
won last year’s clash between the clubs 3-2 in
Atlanta. The Silverbacks
have been almost unbeatable at home, with an impressive 6-1-2 record within
the friendly confines of their new stadium. The Lynx on the other hand have
struggled away from home, with only 2 ties from 9 matches to show for their
travels yet this season.
The following evening sees Toronto head into
Charleston to tackle the
Battery at beautiful Blackbaud Stadium. The Lynx are still
searching for their first ever point in
Charleston, having lost all seven previous matches in
Blackbaud. Charleston occupies second
place in the USL-1 table, with 31 points and a 9-7-2 record. The Battery are also a tough team at home, having failed only
twice all season to defend their home ground.
The Lynx remain one of the
hottest teams in the league, with a tidy 3-1-2 record since July
. The club
escaped the cellar and moved up to 11th place in the USL table
after a successful weekend at home, earning a win and a tie against Portland
and defending USL-1 champion Seattle respectively, keeping the club’s
playoff hopes alive.
LYNX
PLACE TWO ON THE TEAM OF THE WEEK
Toronto Lynx players were
again recognized for their hard work on the pitch, placing two players on
the USL First Division Team of the Week. Gordon Chin and Andres Arango each
make their debut on the team this season. Chin played a spirited and
inspired match on Saturday evening against
Portland in a nil-nil draw
and was unlucky not to find the net on a number of occasions. Veteran
Arango was a potent force in the backfield for the Lynx in both matches,
particularly in a chippy match on Sunday evening against Seattle, which
Toronto won 4-2 on the strength of two
late goals.
