SIX MORE LYNX SIGN ON
THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 2007(Toronto, CANADA) The Toronto Lynx announced today the signing of six more players in advance of their debut PDL season, which kicks off on Saturday, May 12 at 4:00 PM with a visit from the West Michigan Edge. The match will be preceded by the Toronto Lady Lynx' season opener at 1:00 PM versus the Sudbury Canadians.
Defender Kayin Jeffers joins midfielders Justin Hay and Damion Scott along with forwards Oswald Adu, Niki Miodrag and Kevin Omokhua in Lynx colours for 2007. The sextet bring the total of players currently signed for the season to 11, with more signings to be announced in the coming weeks.
Brampton's Omokhua comes to the Lynx from the Ottawa Fury, whom he led in scoring for the past two seasons with 11 goals in both 2005 and 2006. He was named to the All-Eastern Conference Team following his stellar 2006 season with the Fury. The 22-year old just completed his senior season at St. Bonaventure University in Buffalo, where he finished 10th all-time in career scoring with 42 points.
Fellow Bramptonians Miodrag and Scott will be making their PDL debut with the Lynx. Miodrag, 20, suited up for Hamilton Serbians last season, and started against the Lynx in a hard-fought 1-0 loss for Hamilton in the quarter-finals of the CSL Open Canada Cup. The 24-year old Scott will provide veteran leadership in the midfield for the Lynx. He just completed his junior year at Tusculum College in Tennessee, and twice led the Pioneers to the NCAA Division II tournament.
Jeffers, from Oakville, just completed his senior season at James Madison University, starting all 13 games for the Dukes and leading the team to the first round of the NCAA tournament. The biology major received numerous academic awards while at university, including James Madison University Deans List, 2006 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar Athlete All-East Region Team, CAA Conference Commissioner's Academic Award and the James Madison Athletic Director Scholar Athlete award. The tough defender will be counted on by head coach Duncan Wilde to lead the Lynx' backline in 2007.
Toronto's Adu comes to the Lynx via the University of Hartford where he just completed his junior season. The 22-year old earned Division II All-America honours at Nyack College before transferring to Hartford for the 2006 season. The forward attended C.W. Jeffreys Collegiate Institute in North York.
Hay, from Lorne Park in Mississauga, is the youngest Lynx player signed to date. The 19-year old just completed his freshman year at Belmont University in Nashville, and started all 18 games as a rookie. The midfielder won a gold medal for Ontario in 2005 at the Canada Games in Regina.
These six players will join the rest of the Lynx when training camp opens on April 30 in preparation for the season. Five players also earned invites as a result of their performance at yesterday's open trials at Astra Sportsplex in Vaughan. Coach Wilde expects to have about 30 players in camp, competing for about 23 roster spots for the season.
JR LYNX CORNER
The Toronto Lynx Juniors kick off their 2007 season with a challenging tournament and showcase series over the next few weeks in the United States.
"We have worked very hard through the fall and winter to rebuild and strengthen our junior squads", said Club Head Coach Duncan Wilde. "We need to set a very competitive start to the year for all our teams. It is important for us all to understand just how competitive it is playing regularly against high-level American opposition. These are the players that our academy players will compete against for university scholarship placements in their recruitment year. This 2007 spring schedule, is the most difficult one I have ever set up for the program and it will be very useful to us to see how we handle it as we continue preparations to compete in the 2007 Super Y League".
