LADY LYNX TO CELEBRATE DURHAM WOMEN IN SOCCER DAY AT OSHAWA CIVIC CENTRE ON JULY 5
W-League match against Rochester caps action-packed day of soccer activities
THURSDAY JUNE 26, 2008 (Toronto, CANADA) The first-place Toronto Lady Lynx will bring their exciting up-tempo attack to the Oshawa Civic Stadium next Saturday afternoon, July 5, as they join the Durham Region Soccer Association in presenting “Celebrating Durham Women in Soccer Day”. The Lady Lynx’ W-League regular season match against the Rochester Rhinos at 4:00 PM will cap a busy day of soccer activities at the Civic Centre, honouring the growing numbers of female players throughout the region. Proceeds generated from the event will go towards the YWCA Durham Women’s Shelter. Tickets are priced at $8 for adults and $4 for youth.
The event springs on the heels of last year’s highly successful inaugural event held in Pickering, which featured an exhibition match between the Lady Lynx and the Pickering Soccer Club U21 Ladies.
The day will kick off with the U18 Girls Ontario Cup taking place on the outer fields of the complex. The defending U17 champion Oshawa Kicks will be joined by the Flamborough Flames, Markham Lightning, Mississauga Falcons and North Mississauga Panthers in a battle for regional supremacy in the Tournament Round of the annual province-wide competition.
The Play Soccer “On the Road” event team will be on hand between the hours of 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Young soccer players will be able to try their hand at myriad soccer games and activities in a fun and challenging environment designed to teach them the skills needed to be a pro!
The action inside the stadium will kick off at 1:00 PM when the Durham East All-Stars tackle the Durham West All-Stars. The best players in the region will face off for local bragging rights, while showcasing the high level of talent throughout the area.
Following the All-Star Match, the 7-1-1 Toronto Lady Lynx will kick-off against the Rhinos in a key North Division matchup. The Lady Lynx are 5-0-0 lifetime against their Lake Ontario rivals, and will be looking to rebound from their first loss of the season, a tight 3-2 loss to the Ottawa Fury on June 22 in the team’s last match.
The Lady Lynx have a strong connection with the Durham Region, led by Oshawa native Danny Stewart at the helm and Pickering’s Paul DeAbreu assisting in the coaching duties. Standout defender Kelsi Landry, one of the W-League’s best young players hails from Whitby, and forward Brooke McCalla, from Pickering, will be making her season debut for the Lady Lynx.
Local youth clubs will be involved in many aspects of the event, including taking part in mini-scrimmages during half-time at both games and prior to the Lady Lynx game, as ball retrievers for both matches, player escorts during the pre-game ceremonies and as part of the Tim Hortons tunnel greeting the teams as they enter the field prior to kick-off.
Tickets can be purchased by calling the Lynx ticket hotline at 416-251-4625 x 31, or through the Durham Region Soccer Association and its various clubs. Tickets will also be available at the Oshawa Civic Stadium box office starting at 12:00 PM on game day.
