MARINERS HOLD OFF LYNX CHARGE
WASHINGTON'S 2 GOALS LEAD VIRGINIA
BEACH TO WIN
Date: Saturday, May 8, 2004
Venue: Virginia Beach Sportsplex
Attendance: 1,655
Kick off Time: 7:30pm
Final Score: Virginia Beach 3
Toronto 2
Match Summary: Despite their third
road loss in a row, 3-2 at the hands of the Virginia Beach Mariners, the Toronto
Lynx turned in another quality performance in front of 1,655
fans at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex tonight. "Each game we get
better," remarked Lynx Head Coach, Duncan Wilde. "The
players are giving 110% and have shown great character in the past two
matches, battling back from 2 goals down to give ourselves a chance." The
Lynx gave up an early goal once again tonight, when the
A-League's 2003 second leading goal scorer, Dante Washington put
Virginia Beach on the board only 5 minutes in. However, the lead would be
short lived as Lynx rookie, Jamie Dodds' first A-League goal evened the score
in the 10th minute. Daniel Alvarez ended a frantic first quarter of an
hour putting the Mariners ahead with a goal at the 15th minute mark. "We
are an attacking team and are very good at maintaining possession,"
continued Wilde. "Unfortunately, we are still a bit naive defensively and
vulnerable to the counter attack. We are giving away far too many
breakaway goals." Washington's second goal of the game in the 48th
minute gave the Mariners a 3-1 cushion, before Lynx striker Ali Gerba turned
his defender at the top of the 18-yard box before unleashing a rocket
into the top corner in the 83rd minute. Although Gerba's first goal of
the season left the crowd shacking their heads in disbelief, it was as close as
the Lynx would come as the Mariners held on for a 3-2 victory. Despite
having given up 10 goals in his past three starts, Lynx goalkeeper Bryheem
Hancock was outstanding once again making 6 saves. "Bryheem is playing
fantastic, however, he is not getting the protection he deserves," says
Wilde. "There was nothing he could do about any of the goals. Our supporters
must be patient as we are rebuilding. We are ahead of schedule in
performance but not in results. Its time now to get organized for the start of
our home schedule and prepare for Rochester next weekend." The Lynx take
on the Raging Rhinos in their much anticipated home opener next Sunday, May
16th at 4pm.
