Match Summary:
The Toronto Lady Lynx made history this afternoon, playing
their first ever W-League match at home against the Vermont
Lady Voltage. Encouraged by their 2-1 victory against the
London Gryphons in an exhibition match just over a week
ago, the Lady Lynx hoped to record their first win as a
W-League franchise. In their warm up match, Natalie
Martineau and Deana Everrett found the back of the net for
the Lady Lynx. Head Coach Brett Mosen hoped that his
squad would be energized by the home crowd and the historic
significance of the event. Vermont were victorious in their
one and only game of the season, while for the Lady Lynx, it
was their first taste of W-League action. Toronto started
well and enjoyed much of the possession throughout the first
25 minutes, but it was Vermont who struck first. Vermont
striker Ashley Pfaff's run onto a long ball and ensuing shot
resulted in the first goal of the game in the 28th minute.
Toronto equalized immediately through Amanda Cicchini after
she controlled a cross and shot past Vermont 'keeper
Luckenbill in the 29th minute. Toronto almost took the
lead before the half when Melanie Booth's free kick came off
the crossbar. Despite outplaying and out-shooting 10-2
Vermont in the first half, Toronto had to settle with a 1-1
tie at the half. Toronto started the second half the same
way they ended the first, playing much of the second frame
in Vermont's half. Toronto peppered Vermont with eight
shots but could not find the back of the net, and the game
was sent into extra time. It was in extra time that Toronto
finally capitalized on their many chances. Impressive
second half substitute Kim warner scored in the 93rd minute,
and it was Warner again in the 105th, scoring off of a
breakaway to make it 3-1 in the hosts favour. It was 3-1 to
the Lady Lynx as the game drew to a close . Toronto gained
a well deserved 3 points from this afternoon's encounter
after dominating play and possession, and out-shooting
Vermont 23-5. Natalie Martineau, Deana Everett, and Kim
Warner were constantly dangerous for the Lynx, while the
Lynx defense produced a very solid performance. Stacy
Vanboxmeer played well in goal, although only being forced
to make two stops through 110 minutes. This afternoon's
result leaves Vermont 1-1-0 this season, while today's win
was Toronto's first game. The Toronto Lady Lynx are next in
action against the New York Magic on May 21st at Centennial
Stadium for a 7:30 PM EST kickoff.
