Match Summary:
The Toronto Lynx wrapped up
their ninth home season of professional soccer in
Toronto tonight as they welcomed the Minnesota Thunder
to Centennial Park Stadium for the Lynx Labour Day
Celebration presented by the Canadian Auto Workers.
The initial stages of the first half were confined to
back and forth play in the middle third of the field as
both teams felt one another out. The first chance fell
to Toronto in the 24th minute. After a series of well
executed passes involving Said Ali and Robbie
Aristodemo, Jamie Dodds fired at goal from 10 yards out,
but watched his effort hit the side netting.
Minnesota came close five
minutes later. Godfrey Tenoff's run down the right
side of the field ended with him alone with Lynx
goalkeeper Theo Zagar. Zagar's charge from goal broke
the play up and Toronto regained possession.
Toronto was close again in
the 34th minute when Aristodemo's bicycle kick was
stopped by Minnesota 'keeper Nicolas Platter.
Aristodemo then flicked the rebound towards goal while
on his back, but Platter pushed it out.
Minnesota took the lead in
the 40th minute. Johnny Menyongar's run ends with the
ball rolling to an unmarked Chad Dembrowski, who fired
under a sprawling Zagar from just inside the area. It
was 1-0 to Minnesota after 45 minutes.
The second half picked up
quickly. Toronto pressed ahead looking for an
equalizer, and came close in the 62nd minute. Joe
Mattachione's free kick was sent into the box. Rick
Titus rose to head the ball, but his effort came off the
top of the bar.
Toronto were on level terms
three minutes later. Sean Fraser's impressive run down
the left side ended with him slipping the ball past
Platter from close range.
Minnesota retook the lead in
the 79th minute when second half substitute Aaron Paye
picked up Dombrowski's pass and fired past Zagar into
the top right of the goal from just inside the area.
Toronto pressed ahead
looking for an equalizer, and came close in the 84th and
86th minutes, with Fraser and Eja-Tabe both just off the
mark. It was 2-1 to Minnesota after 90 minutes.
Tonight's result leaves
Toronto in 12th place in the USl First Division with a
record of 3-15-8. Minnesota improves to 10th place with
a record of 7-10-10.
Toronto's next game is on
September 9th at 8:00 when they take on the Puerto Rico
Islanders in Puerto Rico for a doubleheader, with the
second match, Toronto's final of the 2005 season,
being played on September 11th a 4:00 PM.
Notes: Toronto entered
today's match in 12th place of the USL First Division
with a record of 3-14-8. Minnesota sat in 11th with a
record of 6-10-10. Toronto had an all-time record of
2-1-0 against Minnesota. The last match between both
clubs ended 2-1 to Toronto in Minnesota on June
24th.
