Date: July 13, 2007
Venue: Centennial Park Stadium, Toronto, ON
Kick Off Time: 7:30 PM EDT
Final Score: Toronto 2 Fort Wayne 3
Match Summary:
The Fort Wayne Fever upset the Toronto
Lynx 3-2 this evening on Hometown Heroes Night at Centennial Park Stadium. The
visitors ran out to a quick 2-0 lead and held on for the victory, avenging a 2-0
loss at home to the Lynx on June 20 in Fort Wayne. Murphy Wiredu scored again
for the Lynx, continuing his recent form of stellar play. The goal was the
striker's eighth in Toronto's past seven games. The loss drops the Lynx
record to 4-6-4 (16 points) on the season, and officially eliminates them from
the PDL playoffs. Fort Wayne improves to 4-8-1 (13 points), and climbs out of
the Great Lakes division cellar.
Once again, the Lynx started slowly out of the gate, and were punished by the
Fever with two quick strikes. Vic Webb opened the scoring in the 17th minute,
converting a PJ Wilson feed into his second goal of the season. Wilson extended
the lead two minutes later with a goal of his own, his fifth. Toronto began to
rally late in the half, and Wiredu got the Lynx back into the game in the 43rd
minute, slamming home a Kayin Jeffers pass to close the gap to 2-1.
Fort Wayne continued to control the ball after halftime, and extended their lead
to 3-1 in the 50th minute. Wilson earned his fourth point of the evening when
he set up Dave Bauer with Fort Wayne's third of the night. Once again, the Lynx
rallied and Daniel Revivo scored in the 70th minute to bring the team back
within a goal at 3-2. Toronto took charge of the game, and launched wave after
wave at the Fort Wayne goal, but were unable to convert their chances and tie
the match.
The game began to get chippy as the Lynx pushed forward, and a scuffle broke
out in the last minute of the match. Two players were ejected in the aftermath,
with Webb from the Fever and Alex Ruhe Lischke of the Lynx receiving red cards.
The teams settled down and finished the match, and the Fever were able to clinch
the victory.
The Lynx will seek to avenge tonight's loss and will wrap up their 2007 home
schedule on Fan Appreciation Day on Sunday afternoon, July 15 at 4:00 PM against
the same Fort Wayne Fever team. The annual Toronto Lynx Player Awards will be
presented prior to the match, and fans will be able to bid on and purchase their
favourite Lynx player's jersey during a silent auction held throughout the
match. Tickets can be purchased at the stadium box office two hours prior to
kick-off.
