Lynx Wrap Up Road Trip on High Note
Top Fort Wayne 2-0 to complete 5-game trek
Date: June 20, 2007
Venue: Hefner Stadium, Fort Wayne, IN
Kick Off Time: 7:00 PM EDT
Final Score: Toronto 2 Fort Wayne 0
Match Summary:
The Toronto Lynx wrapped up their
season-high five-game road trip with a bang tonight, recording a resounding
2-0 victory over the Fort Wayne Fever. Murphy Wiredu and Jamie Fairweather
scored for the Lynx, who saw their record improve to 2-4-3 (9 points), even with
the Fever (3-5-0, 9 points) for fifth place in the highly competitive Great
Lakes Division of the PDL. Toronto wraps up their road trip with a respectable
2-2-1 record, and have only three road dates remaining on the season.
The game started out even, but the Lynx, playing a 4-5-1 formation, began to
control the midfield and dominate play as the first half unfolded. Wiredu
opened the scoring for Toronto in the 31st minute when he brought down a Rick
Titus feed, thrust foward towards the goal past a helpless Fever defender and
artfully tucked a low drive inside the left post. The marker was his second on
the season. The Lynx put the game away in the 69th minute when Titus flicked
the ball forward to Fairweather all alone atop the 6-yard box. The big
defender made no mistake and hammered it home for his second goal of the year.
Toronto pressed forward for more, but only a strong evening by Zac Gibbens in
the Fever goal kept the score at 2-0, where it remained until the final
whistle. Chris Baker earned his third shutout of the season in net for The
Lynx.
Coach Duncan Wilde is pleased with how his team is beginning to come together.
"The team is really starting to gel, especially after such a long spell away
from home. We've just now got all of our players in town, after their school
years, and our quality is starting to show. We played extremely well tonight,
and we fully expect to remain competitive in the division right down to the
final game against Michigan on July 20."
The Lynx return home this Sunday, June 24 for a 6:00 PM match against the
Indiana Invaders. Fans can purchase tickets for this and any other Lynx/Lady
Lynx match by calling 416-251-4625 x 31 or at the Centennial Park Stadium box
office two hours prior to kick-off. The match will feature the ever-popular
Mascot Mini-Game at half-time featuring mascots from Lynx sponsors and other
Toronto-area organizations.
