Match Summary:
The Toronto Lady Lynx triumphantly marked the club’s return to Varsity Centre
this afternoon with a 4-0 rout of the London Gryphons in W-League action. The
team raised their record to 2-0-0 on the young season, and improved to a stellar
4-0-0 all-time in home openers. Stefania Morra, Kayla Afonso, Oni Bernard and
Rosaly Petriello scored for the Lady Lynx in the win, while former Gryphon
Krista Pace earned the clean sheet in her Lady Lynx debut.
Toronto struck
quickly and took the lead shortly after the opening whistle. Morra corralled a
loose ball during a scramble in the London penalty area in the 2nd minute and
headed it home to give the Lady Lynx the early lead. The goal buoyed the large
School Day crowd on hand at Varsity, and set the tone for the game. Afonso
doubled the Lady Lynx lead in the 28th minute when she fielded the ball on the
right side of the field outside of the box and slammed home a long-distance
strike.
The Lady Lynx continued to press in the second half, and made the lead 3-0 on
Bernard's first goal of her career in the 55th minute.. The rookie collided
with Gryphon keeper Alex Tomascin on a fifty/fifty ball, and managed to control
it after the collision and knock it into the open net. Tomascin was injured on
the play and had to leave the match. St. Catharine's Petriello rounded out the
scoring in the 89th minute when she chipped a ball from 40 yards out past
replacement keeper Kelly Zinkiewicz, giving the Lady Lynx the 4-0 lead. Pace
made 2 saves to earn the shutout.

at 5:30 PM and return home on June 1 for the return match against the Lady
